When the natural days are short, low-intensity lighting is often delivered by Far-red to promote flowering of long-day plants. For some long-day plants, flowering is accelerated most when photoperiodic lighting includes both red and far-red radiation.

730nm far-red light can also regulate leaf angle and increase the  height and leaf area of plants, through expression of associated genes to capture more light energy. Thus, far-red light regulates plant morphology and photosynthetic capacity. Identifying the mechanism of this regulation may lead to increased crop yields.
